The Campaign That Wasn't
Since G.W. Bush was re-elected to his second term, the media has been flooded with opinions as to what
took place that day and what it means for the future of our country.
I would like to suggest that this campaign was about as meaningless as any campaign in our history, but,
according to many, we are on the brink of a new day for our country. Would someone PLEASE
tell me where I am wrong?
- First of all, there were three so-called debates which were not debates at all. Ground rules
were established which ruled out any legitimate debate. The candidates weren't permitted to ask
each other direct questions. Isn't this the heart of ANY debate?
- Substantial amounts of time were spent about what each of the candidates did with respect to the
Vietnam campaign (so what!).
- Much of the balance of time was spent saying in effect "I can do it better than you
can."
- Very little time was spent giving ANY specific remedies for any of our
serious problems.
- Several of our MOST SERIOUS problems were not even mentioned during the
campaign (i.e., immigration, loss of sovereignty, out-of-control balance of payments, migration of our GOOD
jobs to foreign countries).
- Neither candidate (or their surrogates) made any attempt to ACCURATELY
educate the voters about critical issues.
- Either candidate could have opened the campaign to third-party candidates, but refused to do so.
WHY?
- Both candidates made frequent references to "the war in Iraq." By no stretch of the
imagination can our involvement in Iraq be called a WAR. In a war,
the enemy is a known and identifiable group of people.
With a "Christian" president who could have changed any or all of the above, how could this
campaign be called anything but UNChristian and UNAmerican?
In light of the above, is there ANY conclusion that can be drawn other than
that the campaign was a total fraud? Would someone please tell me where I am wrong.
