"If a child cannot learn to ignore offensive comments as a child, how can they handle such when they become adults?" |
What Are We Doing to Our Children? Few would question the statement that children are a gift from God. The ONLY way for children to appear in this world is for TWO supposedly responsible people to agree to do what is necessary to produce a child. When born, a child is TOTALLY dependent and remains dependent for many years, gradually trading dependence for responsibilities. During this time, a child has every RIGHT to be loved and cared for by both parents. With a government so concerned about the rights of every possible identifiable group, why is it that the RIGHTS of our children are given so little consideration? How often do we hear about anyone being concerned about the RIGHTS of children? The plight of children today is of major proportions, Both boys and girls are involved with the criminal justice system at an ever increasing rate. We are told that the second leading causes of death among our teenagers is suicide, and it has been suggested that if it was possible to determine how many fatal automobile accidents are actually suicide, it could well be the leading cause of death. Our children are killing each other 'just for the fun of it'. While there are certainly many GOOD children , those that are not so good are doing things that were seldom done in years gone by. Much legislation passed in recent years has been justified as being for the good of our children. Household incomes are probably greater than ever before and children have more material things than could have been imagined even a few short years ago. Why then are children involved in so many destructive practices? WHAT HAS GONE WRONG? One of the first major problems affecting the behavior of children was the law permitting NO FAULT DIVORCE Few things could have a more adverse affect on children than for their parents to divorce. Many say it is better to divorce than to have parents who don't get along with each other. Recent studies have shown that a good percentage of divorce people agree that should not have done so. Another MAJOR factor is the way courts today grant child subsidy to the mother, except in extreme situations. Studies have shown that children raised in single parent families where the rather is the parent have no more social problems than children raised in two parent families. The collapse of our government education system has been a major factor in hindering the preparation of our children for adulthood. In situations where parents were lack in discipline their children, many times schools were able to step in and teach discipline. In many schools it is even considered teaching religion to teach children to treat others as they would want to be treated themselves even though this is the core of most if not all religions. Government schools are even failing to teach children the basic building blocks necessary to learn most anything. Children cannot read and there are many reports that high school graduates cannot even properly fill out an employment application. It was reported recently that over 2/3 of recent COLLAGE graduates who were anticipating entering the teaching profession could not pass a basic TEACHER test. There have been many reports where children are not even permitted to participate in competitive sports. The theory being that if they loose, it will adversely affect their self esteem. Six yeas olds have been suspended from schools for playing cops and robbers using their fingers as pistols. Millions of children have been put on drugs to game them down when there is good reason to believe that these children are just being children. Children are being subjected to 'sensitivity training' when they say something that might offend another child. If a child cannot learn to ignore offensive comments as a child, how can they handle such when they become adults? We are not expecting children to act like adults without permitting them to go through the process necessary to become responsible adults.. Many government programs make it very easy for a wife to leave a husband by providing housing an d other benefits even when the problem is one that has the vast majority of parents are able to handle without resorting to divorce. Other government programs make it too costly for employers to employ young people when in times past, this was the route taken by many young people to enter the work force. It is quite obvious that legislation enacted in recent years has done more to adversely affect our children that any other factor. Yet the government has been a total failure in its primary responsibility i.e. to protect those leas able to protect themselves. Our children. NO FATHER OR MOTHER SHOULD BE PERMITTED TO IGNORE THEIR REPSPONSIBILTY TO THOSE THEY CHOOSE TO BRING INTO THIS WORLD. There are few of us who are not guilty to one degree or another for the plight of our children today. Even those fighting for the lives of the unborn seem to give little thought to who will care for these children after they arrive in this world. Those us concerned about the future of our country would do well to think about these issues. The least any of us can do is to talk about these issues and do whatever we restore for our children their Good given. Rights. |
