Where There is a Will, There is a Way!

What would or founding fathers think if they were to return to find that so many of our legislators begin campaigning for the next election immediately after winning an election? It is difficult to fault them for this when there are family responsibilities that make it important for the head of a family to plan for the long term needs of his or her family. Yet, how many can give TOP priority to what is best for the long term health of our country when faced with the prospect that they may be looking for work in just two or six years?

One could easily conclude that the result of his predicament is that our legislators spend vast amounts of time catering to one group or another in order to win their votes. It is very easy to conclude that our government has grown such as it has for just that reason.

In recent years, our legislature has spent vast amounts of time passing laws that are nothing less than an attempt to add extra punishment for a specific crime when someone deems that crime to have been committed because the perpetrator had a personal reason for committing the crime. Now, who of us can KNOW that we can judge the motive behind decisions made by our parents, wives or children? If we are honest with ourselves, we have to admit that such is simply impossible. How then can our legal system judge why a total stranger says or does something that is criminal or offends another?

When our legislators are not spending time judging our motives they are REFORMING something. There is no need to reform something if it is deemed acceptable the way it is. There is reason to believe that the average citizen thinks of reform as getting people off the dole when the usual result of reform is that more people are added to the list of those receiving benefits.

If the laws being reformed were weighed against the enumerated powers set forth in our constitution, there is good reason to believe that most, if not all these laws would never have been passed in the first place.

Aside from the above, laws have been passed that are just absurd, to say the least. How else can anyone describe laws that make a person or firm financially responsible for cleaning up materials that were disposed of legally in past years only to be placed somewhere else to contaminate another piece of property? How can retroactive liability be justified?

Another good example of irresponsible government is the treatment afforded the tobacco companies. Our tax dollars subsidize the tobacco farmer and then we punish the companies when that sell their product to the consumer. How can any intelligent person conclude that smokers do not realize that the habit is harmful?

One could go on and on listing actions of government that would fail a simple common sense test.

Few, if any of these examples can be held up as having much if any bearing on the long term health of our country. It is very easy to conclude then that most or all of these measures are an attempt to win the support of one group or another in order to win votes to get reelected.

Some legislators have indicated that they are not happy with having to constantly campaign. So, there is good reason to believe that many would support an effort to change the basic structure in order that all of their time could be spent on weighing the merits of EVERY issue against the constitution and what is best for the long term health of our country.

Voter turnout in recent elections would suggest that the average voter realizes that something is very wrong in our government. Could it be that if the voters would see that a REAL effort was being made by our legislators to give top priority to the best interest of our country, that they would take a greater interest in governmental affairs?

Correcting this problem can and should be a nonpartisan effort. This brochure is an appeal to the leaders of our country to organize our legislators to study ways to MOTIVATE ALL legislators to consider FIRST the long term health of our country in EVERYTHING they do. This would be a very difficult task, but WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY!

We owe nothing less to our children and future generations. We can’t let our country become just another third world nation!
